It will be more western than you think .. you do not need to know how to speak japanese but you can still have a wonderful enlightened asian expierence. My asian expierences were the same. Also, enjoy your stop over in San Fran while you are there. I lived in Noe Valley at 26th and Noe. 24th Street is where all the shops and restaurants are. Noe Street runs parallel to Castro Street and is very colorful area if you have not been there. Also visit the old church in Mission Delores. I Used to go to church there, play tennis in the park and sun on the hill. It is a very popular spot.
